Many people say what a waste of time Guitar Hero is, and that it consumes most of one’s life. And it does, in a sense, take up a lot of time. Even though I’ve never heard one complaint about any of the first three Guitar Heroes, it could still be improved. Enter the fourth in the series from the boys at Activision; only this time, there’s a mission to kill the rivals known as Rock Band.
The game that makes you think you are better than Slash is back, with wireless drums and a microphone added to the list, although you can buy them separately. The game is Rock Band compatible. The guitar is very nice, but I am worried. They always elongate the strum bar, and soon I think they will make it big enough to land a plane on. Nevertheless, the slide bar is very nice to look at and simple to use, if you bother using it much at all, and the direction buttons are easy to use, so it is much more practical than any other guitar peripheral.
The 86-song set list is a lot to get through for a career, but most of the songs are highly addictive, like Trapped Under Ice by Metallica, and Hot For Teacher by Van Halen. There is the odd song or two that don’t quite work, such as the Foo’s Everlong, or Shiver by Coldplay, the latter just about putting the ‘fun’ into ‘funeral’.
No matter which instrument you play, there is always a good song out there, not to mention the songs you can download online, like the new Metallica’s Death Magnetic album, which, if things went my way, would be played so loud that even the Aussies could hear me. I will not give away too many songs, as there are some surprises in the form of a few classics.
Online game play could not get any better if you were standing next to the person/people that you were playing. You can now have a band versus band match, which consists of eight people playing each other. You can also one on one in drums also, and two on two with bass and guitar, all online, meaning you cannot get bored of who you play, or what you play. It does beat the Rock Band online play, and not once has it lagged out.
The real party piece of GH:WT is the new GHTunes studio and community, in which you can create your own masterpiece, with ripping solos to make Tom Morello cry, and drum beats to make any world class drummer quake in their boots. It is also easy to learn, and you can post your song across the world.
So overall, GH:WT is a fantastic way to make you think that you are amazing at playing an instrument, and it is also great for parties or gatherings, making it one of my favourite games of the year. I would only want to have the slide bar emphasised more so that it has a purpose of being on the guitar.
Oh, I also want Misery Business wiped off the face of the Earth. Pronto.
